On June 5, 2016, the 4th Buddhism lecture at Thai Buddhist Meditation Center was given by Ven. Phramaha Pongsak Thaniyo with a 30-minute meditation session prior to the lecture.
The teaching monk gave an explanation about the propagation of Buddhism after Lord Buddha’s era, different sects of Buddhism that happened after 100 years of the death of Lord Buddha (Parinibbana), some changes in the code of monastic discipline (Vinaya), the discourses (Sutta) and Lord Buddha’s teachings (Dhamma), the principles of Buddhist propagation.
The lecture continued to the division of Buddhism in 2 different sects, Theravada and Mahayana, 400-500 years after the death of Lord Buddha; both contained similar teachings, but different practices, i.e. Mahayana Sect emphasized in becoming a Bodhisattva and Theravada Sect emphasized in practicing to become an Arahant; therefore, they contained some distinct differences clearly seen in this present era.
Please stay tuned for the next lecture given next week (Sunday, June 19).
