On June 6, 2016, Buddhists from the states of Oregon and Washington, led by Venerable Bhavanavithes, Abbot of Seattle Meditation Center, met with Mr. Earl Blumenaeur, U.S. Representative from Oregon, District 3, to present a letter to the U.S. Government. The letter expressed their concern for the violation of human rights and the unfair treatment of Phrathepyanmahamuni by the Thai Government, and asked the United States Government to look into it. In the same meeting, Mr. Teddy Bhodisee, an American war veteran, made a speech about the importance of meditation practice as a way to remedy stress and mental conditions suffered by war veterans.
Mr. Earl expressed his understanding about the human rights conditions in Thailand and the concern of Buddhists in America who did not want to see false accusations aimed at someone who has done so much good for Buddhism on an international scale. Mr. Blumenaeur said he would present the letter to Mr. John Kerry, United States Secretary of State, for consideration.
Before departing, Mr. Earl thanked the congregation for their warm welcome and the opportunity to let him participate in their activities. He said it would be his pleasure to continue to participate in their activities in the future
