When We and Our Surroundings Are Unclean, the Mind Wanders Outward

“What is remarkable is this: the more unclean we ourselves or our surroundings are, the more the mind refuses to remain within — it races outward entirely.”

One may wake in the morning in fine spirits and a pleasant mood, yet upon hearing something disagreeable, the mind bolts outward, ready to confront it. Upon catching an unpleasant smell, the mind will not stay within. Upon seeing something dirty or disordered, the mind is immediately drawn out to deal with it.

Conversely, when we ourselves and everything around us is clean and orderly, the mind becomes still — and willingly dwells within.
