The Great Master and the Master Nun have given this guiding principle: whatever may arise in the world, let us establish our foundation well — that is, resolve to accumulate merit to the fullest extent of our ability. For whatever occurs in this world, whether prosperity or decline, depends entirely upon who has much merit and who has little.
If one’s merit is scarce, then no matter how great or how small the changes that occur in the world, whatever one sets one’s hand to or endeavors to accomplish will be difficult to bring to fruition. But if one’s merit is abundant, then no matter how the world may change, progress and prosperity will remain within one’s own hands.
