The human lifespan is brief. One may die today or tomorrow — no one knows in advance the hour of their departure. Therefore, upon recognizing what is unwholesome, abandon it and refrain from it without delay. And whatever is wholesome — hasten to perform it without hesitation, without holding back. Give it one’s fullest effort and one’s utmost strength.
And let one learn to rely upon oneself. Do not look to depend upon others — for no one and nothing in this world is certain or assured. It is far better to cultivate wholesome kamma with wholehearted diligence and make of it a refuge and a foundation for oneself.
