Habit as the Foundation of Individual Decline and Prosperity

Regardless of one’s level of education, and irrespective of whether one’s parents are influential or wealthy, if one possesses good habits, one will bring prosperity to whatever family, establishment, company, or country one is a part of. Such is the power of good habits.

Conversely, wherever poor habits are present — that family, that company, that country will be beset with problems.

The prosperity of any place therefore depends upon the habits of the people within it. If one wishes Thailand to prosper, good habits must be cultivated from childhood. Whether one lives as a layperson or as a monk, good habits must be trained — for the advancement of the nation.

Therefore, if one wishes to see Buddhism flourish, and if one wishes to see the nation prosper, the very first step is to train and correct one’s own habits.
