On May 16, 2567 B.E. (2024), monks from Dhammakaya Temple and novice monks of Sri Lanka, led by Venerable Mununuwela Anuruddha Thero, organized an alms-giving ceremony around Dambulla City as part of the national Vesak festival. When the devotees saw the large group of monks, they respectfully came out to offer dry food, sweets, and water in an orderly and beautiful manner. They placed these offerings in the monks’ alms bowls in front of their homes or shops, creating an impressive sight.
Although the tradition of monks walking for alms-giving is no longer practiced in Sri Lanka, this event was part of the Siam-Sri Lanka Dhammayatra project celebrating the 80th anniversary of the venerable Phra Dhammachayo. The pilgrimage route spans from Dambulla to Matale, scheduled from May 17-20.
